Triumphs over Cornell and North Carolina, two teams still very much in the picture to earn first-round home games, added quality victories and enhanced the Orange's already potent RPI and strength of schedule numbers. Albany, which lost to Syracuse in February, crept back into the top 20 of the RPI after ripping Stony Brook. Beating the Great Danes would count as a quality victory for the Orange, albeit a minor one.
If the NCAA selection committee were to convene today, it probably wouldn't place Syracuse ahead of Duke. But it would be hard to drop the Orange past No. 2 based on the selection criteria, which the committee has stuck close to over the last few years.

Nobody??s playing better than Duke, and no one has an overall resume as good as the Blue Devils??. They remain the projected ACC champion. ?? Denver??s RPI now sits in the top five, it has a good chance to run the table over the next four games and ultimately earn a home game in the NCAA tournament as a result. But the Big East is doing no favors for the Pioneers?? strength of schedule, which doesn??t figure to improve much down the stretch. ??
Loyola??s RPI fell from 3rd to 7th, and it didn??t lose this week. The problem is it played (and beat) Boston University, a first-year program with an RPI of 61 (out of 67). It??s a great example of how playing a poor opponent damages an RPI figure. ?? Cornell is looking more like the sort of team a lot of folks expected this season, but at least the Big Red is back in a share of the Ivy League lead after Harvard fell at Penn. ??
Hofstra dealt Cornell an overtime loss on Saturday, and the Pride has a solid profile. It would be wise, though, not to force the issue for an at-large bid because of its early-season loss to Marquette. ?? In three America East games, Albany has outscored its opponents 52-27. The Great Danes were erratic outside of conference play, but they remain an overwhelming favorite to land an automatic bid. ??
Air Force hasn??t reached the NCAA tournament since 1988, but it scorched Fairfield 16-8 to improve 3-0 in the ECAC. The Falcons and Ohio State are the lone remaining unbeatens in ECAC play and meet this Saturday. ?? Siena now is up two games in the loss column on its nearest competitor in the Metro Atlantic. One more victory in league play clinches the No. 1 seed in the MAAC tournament for the Saints. ??
Saint Joseph??s leads the Northeast in its first season in the league since moving from the Colonial. The much-improved Hawks won 12-9 at Delaware (a CAA member) on Saturday. Not bad for a team that was 2-16 in CAA play the last three years. ?? High Point
